George Franklin Gilliland

George Franklin Gilliland

George Franklin Gilliland (1870-1936), born at Mabees Corner, Jackson County, Ohio was the son of Washington A. and Huldah Elizabeth (Brown) Gilliland and the grandson of George and Julina (Canter) Gilliland. Known as "Frank" to his family, George Franklin's line can be traced back to Nathan Gilliland, who emigrated from Ireland to America and even further back to Scotland, birthplace of Nathan's father Samuel and his grandparents, John and Agnes (Craig) Gilliland, who married 1685 at Saltcoats, Ayrshire.

This is the only known photograph of George Franklin Gilliland, taken from the original tintype. (Submitted by Kate Maynard, granddaughter of George Franklin Gilliland.)

Mary Dice Gilliland

Mary Dice Gilliland

This is a photograph of my grandmother, Mary (Dice) Gilliland, circa 1900-1905. Mary (1880-1965), was the daughter of John and Julia (Rosenmier) Dice, German immigrants who lived in Portsmouth, Ohio. After George Franklin left Jackson County, Ohio and married, he and Mary spent the rest of their lives in Portsmouth.

Charles W. Gilliland

Charlie Gilliland

A recently discovered photograph of Charles W. "Charley" Gilliland, circa 1900-1910, which has been restored by our webmaster, Carmen Carter.

Charley, younger brother of my grandfather, George Franklin Gilliland, was born 25 Feb 1873, at Mabees Corner, Jackson Co, Ohio and died 9 Feb 1952, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is buried at Regina Cemetery.

Charley moved to Saskatchewan following the divorce from his first wife, by whom he had three daughters, only one of whom -- Huldah Elizabeth, named for her grandmother -- survived.

In Regina Charley worked as a house painter and for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, painting RR stations and freight sheds. He was married for the second time to Ruby Bernice Lemon by whom he had two children: Charles Thomas and Anne Bernice. Charles Thomas Gilliland never married; Anne became Anne Bernice Gilliland Bristow. This still vigorous mother of six lives in Alberta.
